I had the recent pleasure of meeting and photographing the amazing vocalist, Victoria Robertson.  She's in town from California for a few weeks and contacted me about a shoot.  She's very sweet, easy to spend time with and has an amazing voice.  Check out her album, On My Mind on iTunes. Streamlining Equipment - Out With The Old

Gear lust.  Photographers are notorious for obsessing about gear.

Over the past several months I've been slowly selling off some of my older unused camera equipment in an effort to become more streamlined.  It's nice to have a closet full of gear, but honestly, I can't remember the last time I used some of it.  Even though it doesn't cost me anything to keep it, it's refreshing to clean house a bit and de-clutter.  It certainly freed up some valuable office space too.

Today was the last big batch that I sold.  One guy bought my Mamiya 645 AFD along with four manual lenses.  I gave him a great deal since he wanted it all, but I didn't give it away either.

I'm down from six cameras to my main two workhorses; the Canon 5D2 and the Phase One 645/P30+.  It's sad to see some of my old equipment go, but having all that stuff was a bit distracting at times.  Like for example, I'd do an outdoor location shoot and I'd bring a giant bag with the Mamiya, a few lenses and rolls of film "just in case" I might want to shoot some film.  Problem is, I almost never took it out of the bag (I know I'm not the only one who does this).  Now my choices are simple, I only have what I have and bring what I need.

Amber Marie Beauty Shoot

I connected with Amber on-line about doing a shoot together.  We both wanted to shoot beauty, so this worked out perfectly.  We had a great time and really had fun with the last shot. :)

Studio Renovation - Almost Done

The new floor is installed, new window casings, base molding, door trim, electrical and most of the paint is completed.  Besides the floor, the other really cool thing is, instead of having just one light bulb dangling from the ceiling, I installed 12 new light fixtures that I can aim for indirect light.  There's still some painting that needs to be done and the actual shooting side of the studio needs work, but this side is just about wrapped up.

Anastasiya Beauty Shoot

I had the pleasure of working with Anastasiya Hrabar again recently.  We did some simple, but elegant beauty shots.  She has a wonderfully strong look and she can deliver great emotions through the camera.

Studio Renovation

Better late than never.  We're finally renovating the studio.  The work is being done on the non-shooting side which will get a new laminate wood floor, base molding, door molding and window casings.  This room slowly became our overflow storage area and started getting embarrassing to have clients see it.  I cleared everything out to have the space ready for the installer.  Today the floor was prepped and floated with level compound.  Tomorrow, the new floor goes down.

Mamiya 120mm Macro

I've been selling off some of my unused equipment lately and decided I wanted to find a good Macro lens for my Phase One.  I've been looking around a bit and found a good used one at Optech's Digital in Seattle, but it was priced at $1,300.  I surfed ebay and craigslist, and finally found one at KEH with a EX+ rating (like new condition) for $450.  I jumped on it.  I spent a little time this morning testing it and so far, I'm happy with the results.

Earlier in the week I ordered a Mamiya-to-EOS adapter so I can use my Mamiya lenses on my Canon 5D2.  You loose communication between the camera and the lens using the adapter, but since the lens is manual, that doesn't really matter.

This is a quick test shot and crop from the Phase One.  I missed focus slightly, but the detail and sharpness looks pretty good.  Click to see larger.
